12oz boxing gloves are the sweet spot for most adult boxers doing bag and pad work in Australia. Heavy enough for wrist support and protection, light enough to not feel cumbersome during fast combinations. This is the most commonly sold weight in Australian boxing equipment stores, and for good reason.
Here's what to look for, what to avoid, and how the options stack up.
Why 12oz?
The oz rating refers to the weight of foam padding in the glove. More foam = heavier glove = more protection for the wearer (and partner in sparring). For bag and pad work:
- 10oz: Lighter boxers (under 65kg) or those focused on speed work. Less protection than 12oz.
- 12oz: Standard for adults 65–85kg doing training sessions. The correct weight for most beginners and recreational boxers in Australia.
- 14oz: Heavier adults (85kg+) or those who want more wrist support during heavy bag sessions.
- 16oz: Sparring only — the extra padding protects the person you're punching.
What Makes a Quality 12oz Glove?
Leather outer
Full-grain cowhide leather is the standard for quality training gloves. It lasts 3–5x longer than vinyl/PU alternatives and develops a better surface feel with use. A glove that doesn't specify the leather type is almost certainly synthetic.
Multi-layer foam
The inner foam should be multi-layer — typically an EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) base with memory foam or similar on the outer layer. Single-layer foam compresses quickly and loses its protective properties after months of regular training.
Wrist support
The velcro wrist closure should extend at least 6cm up the wrist and actually immobilise it. A token strap that folds easily under pressure doesn't protect the wrist joint. This matters more for bag work than it might seem — repetitive bag sessions are how wrist tendinitis develops.
Fit
The glove should fit snugly with the fingers filling but not cramped in the tip. Your fingers should curl naturally into a fist without the tips pressing into foam. A glove that's too wide in the fist doesn't support the hand during impact.
12oz Gloves at Killa Boxing
Killa Boxing's 12oz training gloves use full-grain cowhide leather with multi-layer inner foam. They're used daily at our Marrickville gym — the same pair you'd buy goes through the same training at our facility before it goes on sale. That's our quality filter.
After 6 months of daily gym use with 4–6 boxers sharing the same pairs, the leather shows normal surface wear, the stitching is intact, and the foam retains its protective spring-back. We consider that a pass.

Brands to Know in Australia
Australian boxing gear options at the $120–$180 level:
- Killa Boxing: Gym-tested at Marrickville, full-grain cowhide. Our own brand.
- Punch Equipment: Australian brand with a wide range. Quality is consistent.
- Everlast Pro: The pro range (not the budget line) is decent for training. Widely available.
- Rival: Canadian brand with good Australian availability. Consistent quality across the range.
Brands to Avoid at the Lower Price Points
Several brands available on Australian retail platforms (Amazon.com.au, eBay) sell at $30–$50 as "leather" boxing gloves. These are almost universally vinyl/PU with minimal foam. The marketing is misleading — a $35 glove cannot contain meaningful cowhide leather at retail margin.
Hand Wraps Are Not Optional
Even with quality 12oz gloves, you should wrap your hands every session. Wraps protect the 27 bones in your hand and stabilise the wrist — the glove adds outer padding, but it doesn't immobilise the wrist joint the way wraps do.
