How to Choose the Right Boxing Gloves in Australia

Choosing Glove Weight (oz)

The right glove weight depends on your body weight and training purpose:

  • 10oz: Competition and lighter bag work. Under 60kg.
  • 12oz: Training and bag work. 60–70kg.
  • 14oz: Training and bag work. 70–85kg. Also suitable for all-purpose use.
  • 16oz: Sparring. Recommended for all body weights in contact training.

Not sure? Our Boxing Glove Size Guide covers every scenario.

Training vs Sparring Gloves

Training gloves are optimised for bag and pad work — firmer padding, more precise fit, built for impact absorption on the bag. Sparring gloves are softer and heavier (16oz), designed to protect your training partner as much as yourself during contact sessions.

Serious boxers own both. Beginners can start with a quality 14oz training glove and add sparring gloves when they start sparring.

Leather Quality

Full grain cowhide leather lasts 3–5+ years with proper care. Synthetic leather gloves are cheaper but typically degrade within 1–2 years under regular training. Killa Boxing gloves use full cowhide leather throughout — the same standard as professional gear.

Boxing Gloves FAQs

What oz boxing gloves should I buy?

For bag and pad work: 12oz if under 65kg, 14oz if 65–85kg, 16oz if over 85kg. For sparring: 16oz regardless of weight. When in doubt, go 14oz — it's the most versatile training weight.

How long do boxing gloves last?

Full leather gloves with regular care last 3–5 years under typical training (3–4 sessions per week). Synthetic gloves typically last 1–2 years. Letting gloves air after every session and wiping them down with an antibacterial spray significantly extends lifespan.

Can I use training gloves for sparring?

No. Training gloves are typically 10–14oz with firmer padding — not enough cushioning to protect your sparring partner from hard contact. Use dedicated 16oz sparring gloves for any contact work.

Do boxing gloves come with hand wraps?

Not included by default. Hand wraps are worn under gloves for wrist and knuckle support — add a pair of 4.5m cotton hand wraps to your order.
