Best Boxing Equipment for Women — Gloves, Wraps and Gear Buying Guide Australia

Women now make up roughly 40% of boxing gym memberships in Australia, and the demand for quality boxing equipment sized and designed for women has grown accordingly. This guide covers what to look for in boxing equipment for women — from gloves to hand wraps to head guards — and what to avoid when making purchasing decisions.

Boxing Gloves for Women

The size question

Boxing gloves are sized in ounces — the weight of padding and filling — not hand size. Women's hand dimensions and wrist circumferences are generally smaller than men's, but this doesn't necessarily mean you need a smaller ounce glove. The ounce weight should be selected by intended use:

  • 8–10 oz: Competition (amateur or professional). Only for actual bouts under the supervision of a sanctioned coach.
  • 12 oz: Fitness training, pad work, and bag work for lighter women (under approximately 55–60 kg). Some women's specific competition sparring at lighter divisions.
  • 14 oz: The most versatile all-round training weight for most women. Suitable for pad work, bag work, and light sparring.
  • 16 oz: For heavier women, those with larger hands, or sparring where maximum protection is required.

Fit — the non-negotiable

A glove that doesn't fit correctly is useless regardless of quality. The fingers should not cramp against the end of the glove, the thumb should be in a secure position, and the wrist closure should hold snugly without cutting off circulation. If purchasing online, check the return policy — glove fit can only be determined by wearing them.

Hand Wraps for Women

Hand wraps are not optional. They protect the metacarpal bones, stabilise the wrist joint, and prevent knuckle abrasion — injury risks that are equally relevant for women and men. Women's hands generally require slightly less wrap length than large men's hands. Standard 4.5 metre Mexican-style (slightly elastic) wraps work for most women.

Head Guards for Women

For sparring, head protection is essential. The fit requirements are the same as for men — snug but not tight, stable under impact without rotating over the eyes, sufficient cheekbone and chin coverage. Women with smaller head circumferences should look for guards with adjustable Velcro adjustment rather than trying to make a men's medium work with bulky padding.
