Boxing Glove Size Guide — Which Oz (Ounce) Size Do You Need? 2026

One of the most common questions from people buying their first boxing gloves is: what size do I need? Boxing glove size is measured in ounces (oz) and refers to the weight of the glove — heavier gloves have more padding, lighter gloves are faster with less protection. The 'right' size depends on your body weight, what you're training for, and who you're training with. This guide explains exactly which glove weight you need for every scenario.

The Quick Answer

For most adults training in Australian boxing gyms:

  • Bag work and pad work only (no sparring): 12oz or 14oz
  • Sparring: 16oz (mandatory at most Australian gyms for safety)
  • General training (both bag and sparring): 14oz–16oz depending on body weight
  • Competition amateur boxing: Specified by Boxing Australia competition rules (typically 10oz–12oz depending on weight class)

The Detailed Breakdown

8oz Gloves

8oz gloves are competition gloves, not training gloves. They're used in amateur boxing competition at lower weight classes. You should never spar in 8oz gloves — the reduced padding significantly increases injury risk for both you and your sparring partner. Only use 8oz gloves under direct coach supervision for competition preparation.

10oz Gloves

10oz is primarily a competition weight for lighter weight classes, but is also used by some lighter athletes (under 55kg) for bag and pad work. Most Australian gyms don't recommend 10oz for general training because they offer limited protection during pad work when your training partner is hitting back through the pads.

12oz Gloves

12oz is the standard bag and pad work glove for lighter athletes (roughly 55–70kg). They offer enough protection for bag work and pad rounds while keeping a faster, more responsive feel. Not suitable for sparring at most Australian gyms.

14oz Gloves

14oz is the most versatile training weight, suitable for bag work, pad work, and some sparring contexts for athletes up to approximately 75–80kg. Many Australian gyms allow 14oz sparring for lighter participants when both partners agree. A good all-purpose choice if you're between 65–80kg and training across multiple disciplines.

16oz Gloves

16oz is the standard sparring glove across most Australian boxing gyms. The additional padding significantly reduces injury risk for both sparring partners. Athletes over 80kg should always spar in 16oz; most gyms require 16oz sparring regardless of body weight as a gym-wide safety policy. 16oz is also perfectly suitable for bag and pad work — you'll move slightly slower but the conditioning benefit is comparable.

18oz Gloves

18oz is used by heavier athletes (over 90–100kg) for sparring where additional protection is warranted. Less common in Australian gym environments but available for specific training contexts.

Glove Fit Matters Too

Beyond ounce weight, glove fit affects both performance and safety. Gloves should fit snugly with hand wraps on — not so tight that hand circulation is restricted, not so loose that the glove shifts during impact. Most adults fit standard sizing; brands that offer size variants (S/M/L) allow more precise fit customisation.
