Boxing Glove Weight Guide — 8oz vs 10oz vs 12oz vs 14oz vs 16oz Explained for Australians

Choosing the right boxing glove weight is one of the most important and most misunderstood decisions in boxing gear. The wrong choice means either insufficient hand protection, reduced training effectiveness, or both. This guide breaks down every weight class — from 8oz competition gloves to 18oz heavy sparring — and explains exactly what each is for and who should be using it.

Understanding Glove Weight (Ounces)

The weight of a boxing glove refers to the total weight of the glove in ounces — which is almost entirely padding. Heavier gloves have more foam padding, which means more shock absorption both for the wearer's hands and for the target (sparring partner or pads). Lighter gloves are faster, generate more impact force, and are used in competition. Heavier gloves are safer for sparring because they distribute impact over a larger surface.

Glove Weights Explained

8oz — Competition Only

8oz gloves are used exclusively in professional boxing competition, primarily by lighter weight classes (super bantamweight and below). They're not suitable for training and should not be used on bags or for sparring — they offer minimal hand protection and generate dangerous impact forces. Unless you're a professional boxer in a scheduled fight, you'll never need 8oz gloves.

10oz — Competition and Amateur Sport

10oz gloves are used in amateur boxing (including Olympic-style boxing and Boxing Australia sanctioned events) and by some professional boxers in heavier weight classes. Like 8oz, they're not appropriate for bag or pad training if used for extended sessions. Amateur boxers will have these provided at competition; they don't need to be purchased for general training.

12oz — Bag Work, Pad Work, Fitness Training (Lighter Athletes)

12oz is the most popular glove weight for fitness boxing and bag/pad training for athletes under 70kg (women and lighter men). They're fast enough for combination drilling, have sufficient padding for regular bag sessions, and feel natural in pad work. Most women and lighter men training for fitness should choose 12oz.

14oz — Bag Work, Pad Work, Light Sparring (Medium Athletes)

14oz is the most versatile weight — appropriate for bag work, pad work, and light technical sparring for athletes in the 70–85kg range. This is the glove weight most commonly recommended as an all-rounder for adults. If you don't know what size to buy, 14oz is usually the right default for adults 70–85kg.

16oz — Sparring, Bag Work for Heavier Athletes

16oz is the standard sparring glove. Most gyms require 16oz minimum for sparring — the additional padding protects both the wearer and the sparring partner. For athletes over 85kg, 16oz is also appropriate for bag work. If you intend to spar, get 16oz.

18oz — Heavy Sparring, Large Athletes

18oz gloves are used by very large or heavy-handed athletes (typically 90kg+) for sparring. They're uncommon in Australian gyms but are used in some heavyweight programs.

Quick Reference

  • Women / athletes under 60kg: 12oz
  • Adults 60–75kg, fitness training: 12–14oz
  • Adults 75–90kg, fitness and light sparring: 14–16oz
  • Anyone sparring: 16oz minimum
  • Athletes over 90kg: 16–18oz
