Boxing Gloves Size Guide: What Size Do You Actually Need?

The single most common question we get at Killa Boxing Marrickville is also the simplest: what size boxing gloves do I actually need? The answer depends on your weight, what you're using them for, and your wrist size. This guide covers all three so you can make the right call without trial and error.

Boxing Gloves Size vs Weight: Understanding the Difference

Before getting into the chart, understand that boxing glove "size" refers to weight in ounces (oz) — not a S/M/L sizing system. A 12oz glove weighs 12 ounces (340g), a 16oz glove weighs approximately 453g. Heavier gloves have more padding, which means more protection for both the fighter wearing them and the partner absorbing the punches.

This is important because heavier gloves protect your hands AND your sparring partner. That's why gyms mandate 16oz minimum for all sparring.

Boxing Glove Size Chart (Australia)

Your Body Weight Bag / Pad Work Sparring
Under 50kg 10oz 14oz
50–65kg 10–12oz 14–16oz
65–80kg 12oz 16oz
80–95kg 14oz 16oz
Over 95kg 14–16oz 16–18oz

Most Australian gym-goers training for fitness rather than competition will land comfortably in the 12oz (bag/pad work) or 16oz (sparring) range.

What Are You Using Them For?

Bag Work and Pad Work (10–14oz)

Lighter gloves are faster and give you better feedback when hitting bags or pads. You'll feel the impact more directly, which helps you adjust technique. They're not for sparring — the padding is insufficient to protect your partner.

Most coaches recommend 12oz for general bag/pad training. 10oz is fine if you're under 60kg or prefer maximum speed training. Killa Training Gloves come in 10oz, 12oz, 14oz, and 16oz to suit all training needs.

Sparring (14–18oz)

The extra weight matters here. More padding means your partner absorbs less impact from any given punch, allowing both of you to spar harder and longer without accumulating unnecessary damage. Most Australian gyms enforce 16oz as the minimum sparring glove. Some bigger fighters (90kg+) prefer 18oz when working with lighter sparring partners.

Killa Elite Sparring Gloves are available in 14oz, 16oz, and 18oz. The 16oz is the standard choice for most Australian fighters.

Competition (8–10oz)

Amateur and professional boxing competitions use very specific glove weights determined by the sanctioning body — typically 8oz under 64kg and 10oz over 64kg. If you're competing, your club will advise on the exact specification. Competition gloves are not for gym training and should not be used for sparring.

What About Hand Size?

The oz weight doesn't directly tell you about hand fit. Brands size their interiors differently. Here's what to look for in fit:

  • Your fingers should reach the top of the finger pocket comfortably — not jammed against the tip, not loose by more than 1cm.
  • The Velcro wrist strap should sit at mid-forearm with the closure centred on the wrist.
  • When making a fist inside the glove, your knuckles should press against the padding with no gap. A gap means the glove is too large.
  • Women generally size down by 2oz for the same training purpose — a woman doing bag work would choose 10oz where a man of equivalent weight might choose 12oz, because women's hands are typically smaller and fit medium density padding better at lower weights.

One Pair or Two?

If you're training at a boxing gym in Australia for general fitness and classes, one pair of 12oz gloves will serve you across bag rounds, pad rounds, and light technical sparring. You're not going to be doing competitive hard sparring as a beginner, so you don't need a second pair immediately.

Once you're training more seriously and sparring regularly, you'll want:

  • Training gloves (10–14oz) for bag and pad work — save the padding on your sparring gloves
  • Sparring gloves (16oz) exclusively for sparring — the padding stays fresh, and your partners will appreciate it

This is the exact setup most intermediate Killa Boxing fighters use. The Killa Boxing Starter Kit includes training gloves and hand wraps to get you through your first months of training.
