Hand wraps are a purchase most boxing beginners get wrong the first time — either buying the wrong type, the wrong length, or simply not understanding what they do. This guide covers everything about choosing and using hand wraps in Australia.
What Hand Wraps Actually Do
Hand wraps serve three purposes: (1) compress and stabilise the small bones of the metacarpus (the palm area) under the impact of punching, (2) brace the wrist joint against extension under impact load, and (3) protect the thumb by keeping it tucked in a safe position. Without wraps, even moderate bag work creates cumulative stress on structures that have limited blood supply and heal slowly.
Types of Hand Wraps
Traditional cotton (non-stretch)
Woven cotton, no elasticity. Used at professional and elite amateur competition level because they allow precisely controlled tension across every part of the hand. Require more experience to apply correctly — beginners often apply them too loose or too tight because the lack of elasticity gives no natural "correct" feel. Not recommended as a first purchase.
Semi-elastic (stretch) wraps — RECOMMENDED
Cotton-polyester blend with light elasticity. Most widely used in Australian gyms. The mild stretch means they conform to hand contours naturally, making them more forgiving to apply for beginners. Provide excellent protection for training. Available in 3.5m (short) and 4.5m (standard) lengths. For most adults, 4.5m provides better coverage.
Mexican-style wraps
More elastic than standard stretch wraps — closer to a bandage in feel. Very conforming, popular with heavier hitters who want a snug glove fit. The high elasticity can create uneven tension if not applied carefully — less beginner-friendly than standard semi-elastic.
Inner gloves (gel wraps / quick wraps)
Fingerless gel-padded gloves that slip on like a glove and close with velcro at the wrist. Fast to use, adequate for light training and fitness classes, but provide significantly less wrist stabilisation than proper fabric wraps. Not recommended for heavy bag work or serious training.
Length Guide
- 2.5–3m: Suitable for children or very small adult hands. Insufficient for full adult wrapping.
- 3.5m: Standard short wrap. Adequate for smaller adult hands and shorter finger coverage method.
- 4.5m: Standard length for most adults. The extra length allows full thumb wrapping, additional knuckle layers, and wrist coverage.
- 5m: For larger hands or those who want extra wrist padding in competition wrapping style.
Colours
Hand wrap colour is entirely personal — no functional difference between colours. Killa Boxing wraps are available in black, red, blue, white, and other colours depending on current stock. Buy what you like. Some gyms use colour to differentiate personal wraps (everyone keeps track of their own pair by colour).
How Many Pairs?
Buy two pairs minimum. Wraps need to wash and dry between sessions — one pair in use while the other dries. If you train daily, three pairs is better.
