Boxing organises competition by weight class — athletes compete against opponents of similar body mass. This creates theoretically fair competition by removing the extreme physical disadvantage of fighting someone significantly larger. Here's how the weight class system works in 2026 under the major boxing organisations operating in Australia.

Amateur Boxing Weight Classes (ABF/Australian Boxing)

Amateur boxing in Australia operates under the Australian Boxing Federation (ABF) and NSW Boxing for NSW athletes. The weight categories align with World Boxing's amateur classifications:

  • Minimumweight: Up to 46kg
  • Light Flyweight: 46–49kg
  • Flyweight: 49–52kg
  • Bantamweight: 52–56kg
  • Featherweight: 56–60kg
  • Lightweight: 60–64kg
  • Light Welterweight: 64–69kg
  • Welterweight: 69–75kg
  • Middleweight: 75–81kg
  • Light Heavyweight: 81–92kg

Masters/Veteran Categories

Masters boxing (for athletes over 35) uses the same weight classes but with modified rules including mandatory standing eight counts and additional safety considerations.
