Boxing gloves accumulate sweat, bacteria, and odour with every session. Without proper care, even high-quality gloves deteriorate faster and become a hygiene issue. Here's the complete care routine that significantly extends glove lifespan and keeps them training-ready.
After Every Session: The Essential Steps
Step 1: Don't Leave Them in Your Bag
The single most common and damaging mistake. Leaving wet gloves in a closed gym bag creates the perfect bacterial and fungal environment. As soon as you're done training, take the gloves out and let them air.
Step 2: Air Dry Properly
Place gloves in a well-ventilated area with the opening facing down or propped open. Direct sunlight helps (UV kills bacteria), but avoid very prolonged direct sun on leather — it can dry out and crack the material. A cool, dry, airy space is ideal. Open wrist-strap width to allow air circulation inside.
Step 3: Wipe Down After Each Session
Using a clean damp cloth or antibacterial wipe, wipe the exterior surface — particularly the knuckle and back-of-hand area. This removes surface bacteria and sweat residue before it's absorbed into the material.
Weekly Maintenance
Inner Surface Treatment
Spray the inside of the glove with an antibacterial deodoriser spray specifically designed for boxing equipment (or sports equipment generally). Allow to dry completely before using again. This controls bacterial growth at the source — the inner lining that direct contact sweat saturates.
Exterior Conditioning (Leather Gloves)
Every 2–4 weeks, apply a small amount of leather conditioner to the exterior surface and buff with a clean cloth. Leather needs moisture to remain supple — conditioner prevents cracking and maintains the material's flexibility. Use sparingly; excess conditioner attracts dust.
What Not to Do
- Don't put in the washing machine: Machine washing destroys the foam padding structure and compromises the stitching. Most boxing gloves are not machine washable.
- Don't dry with direct heat (hair dryer, radiator): High heat breaks down the foam and dries out leather, causing cracking. Air dry only.
- Don't spray with regular perfume or bleach: These damage the materials. Use products designed for sports equipment.
Controlling Smell
Boxing glove odour comes from bacterial growth. If your gloves are developing persistent smell despite regular airing:
- Place cedar wood inserts inside gloves when not in use (absorbs moisture and has natural antibacterial properties)
- Fill a pair of socks with cat litter (unscented), tie off the top, and place inside gloves — surprisingly effective at absorbing moisture and odour
- Dedicated boxing glove deodoriser sprays are the most convenient option — apply after every session
Glove Bags and Storage
Store gloves in a mesh bag rather than a sealed plastic or synthetic bag — mesh allows continued air circulation during storage. The Killa Boxing Backpack has dedicated ventilated compartments specifically for this purpose.
