Ask any experienced boxer and they'll tell you the same thing: wrapping your hands is non-negotiable. Skip this step and you're one heavy bag session away from a sprained wrist or broken knuckle. Whether you're a complete beginner at Killa Boxing Marrickville or an experienced fighter, this guide will ensure you wrap correctly every single time.
Why Hand Wraps Matter
Your hands contain 27 bones, 29 joints, and over 100 ligaments. Every punch transfers enormous force through that structure. Hand wraps serve three critical purposes:
- Knuckle protection — compresses the knuckles so they move together as one unit rather than shifting and grinding against each other
- Wrist support — keeps the wrist in proper alignment, preventing hyperextension under load
- Skin protection — creates a friction barrier between your skin and the inside of your glove
A quality pair of hand wraps used correctly can be the difference between 10 years of healthy training and a career cut short by chronic injury.
What You'll Need
Before you start, grab your Killa Elite Pro Hand Wraps. At 4.5 metres, they're the right length for adult hands — long enough to cover the wrist, palm, and all five knuckles properly. Choose traditional cloth wraps over gel wraps for training; they give you more control over tension and last far longer.
Step-by-Step Hand Wrapping Technique
Step 1 — Fan your fingers open
Spread your fingers wide and keep them spread throughout the wrapping process. If you wrap with your hand closed, the wrap will be too loose once you open your hand inside the glove, causing it to bunch and rub.
Step 2 — Loop the thumb
Slide the loop over your thumb. The Velcro end of the wrap should face inward (toward your palm). Make two full passes around your wrist — not too tight, not too loose. You should be able to slip one finger between the wrap and your wrist.
Step 3 — Cross the palm
Bring the wrap diagonally across the back of your hand toward your pinky knuckle, then around the back of all four knuckles. Circle the knuckles 3 times. This is the protection layer that matters most — don't rush it.
Step 4 — Wrap between the fingers
Now thread between each finger: over the back of the hand, between the ring and middle fingers, back across the palm, then between the middle and index fingers. This locks the bones of your hand in position. Skip this step and your knuckles will shift on impact.
Step 5 — Return to the wrist
Come back across the palm and add another pass around your wrist. This reinforces the support before you make a fist.
Step 6 — Cover the thumb
Bring the wrap around the outside of your thumb once, creating a safety lock so it can't bend backward under impact.
Step 7 — Finish at the wrist
Use any remaining wrap length to add final passes around the wrist until you reach the Velcro end. Secure it flat, not bunched. Make a fist and check the tension — your fingers should be able to curl fully closed without feeling pinched.
How to Check Your Wrap Is Correct
A properly wrapped hand should:
- Feel snug but allow full finger movement
- Show no visible gaps or bunching at the knuckles
- Have the wrist feeling supported — not restricted
- Be smooth on the back of the hand with no ridge that will press into your palm
If you feel tingling in your fingers within a few minutes, the wrap is too tight. Rewrap immediately — a wrap that cuts off circulation is worse than no wrap at all.
Washing Your Hand Wraps
Rinse wraps in cold water after every session to remove sweat. Machine wash weekly in a mesh laundry bag on a gentle cycle. Never put them in the dryer — the elastic degrades under heat. Hang them to air dry loosely extended so they don't set in a bunched shape.
Replace your hand wraps every 6–12 months of regular training or sooner if the elastic loses its snap or the material starts fraying.
