Kids Boxing in Australia — A Parent's Complete Guide

Parents considering boxing for their children in Australia often have two questions: Is it safe? And what age should they start?

Both are valid. This guide answers them practically, based on what we see at our own Marrickville gym and how the sport is structured in Australia.

What Age Can Kids Start Boxing in Australia?

Most structured boxing programs in Australia accept children from 7–8 years old. Younger children can participate in fitness-boxing activities (shadowboxing, footwork drills, non-contact bag work), but structured technical training generally starts at around 7.

Amateur competitive boxing through Boxing Australia typically starts at 9–10 years old for sanctioned competition. Most gyms don't encourage competition until 10+.

Is Boxing Safe for Kids?

The honest answer: non-contact boxing training is very safe. Contact sparring carries risk, but most junior boxing programs are structured to minimise or eliminate this.

What kids' boxing programs typically include:

  • Footwork and movement drills
  • Pad work with a coach (no counter-punching from the child's perspective)
  • Bag work (hitting, not being hit)
  • Fitness conditioning
  • Discipline and focus training

What reputable junior programs are careful about:

  • Head shots — most junior programs are entirely no-head-contact until teenagers
  • Age and size matching in sparring (where it occurs)
  • Mandatory head guards and mouthguards for any contact
  • Qualified coaches with Working With Children Checks

Benefits for Kids

Boxing is often recommended for children who struggle with traditional team sports because:

  • Individual progression: You don't need to be fast or coordinated on day one — skills develop visibly over weeks, which builds confidence
  • Discipline: The gym floor has clear expectations and structure that many kids respond well to
  • Physical literacy: Boxing develops coordination, balance, and body awareness
  • Focus and attention: The concentration required in boxing has documented links to improved classroom focus

Finding a Good Junior Boxing Gym in Australia

When evaluating a boxing gym for your child:

  1. Check Working With Children registration of coaches — this is mandatory in all Australian states for coaches working with minors
  2. Ask about their junior curriculum — is there a structured progression, or do kids just train alongside adults?
  3. Understand their sparring policy — when does it start, how is it supervised, is it compulsory?
  4. Observe a class — good junior programs have clear structure, engaged coaches, and an atmosphere that's firm but supportive
  5. Ask about competition — is participation optional? (It should be)

What Equipment Does a Child Need?

Junior boxing equipment sizing is important — adult gear on small hands doesn't protect properly.

Junior Boxing Gloves

  • 6oz: Children under 8, small hands
  • 8oz: Children 8–12, the most common junior size
  • 10oz: Older children (12–14) or larger builds

Junior gloves should fit snugly without the fingers crowding the tip of the glove. A glove that's too large means your child is punching in a floppy glove — wrist support is compromised.

Hand Wraps for Kids

Junior wraps (2.5–3m) are available. Adult 4.5m wraps are too long for small hands. Your child's gym coach will show them the correct wrapping technique — ensure they're doing it each session.

Head Guards

If any contact is involved, a properly fitting junior head guard is non-negotiable. It should cover the forehead, temples, and cheekbones without obscuring vision. Fit is more important than brand.

Mouthguard

Required for any contact. A fitted mouthguard from a dentist is better than an off-the-shelf one, but a heat-moulded boil-and-bite mouthguard is a reasonable starting point.

Cost of Kids' Boxing in Australia

Junior boxing class membership typically runs $80–$150/month. Equipment costs:

Item Cost
Junior boxing gloves (8oz leather) $60–$100
Junior hand wraps $10–$15
Junior head guard $60–$90
Mouthguard $10–$20
