Before you step into your first sparring session, you need the right gear. Missing critical protection equipment in sparring isn't a minor inconvenience β it's a safety issue. Here's the complete checklist of what you need and what each item does.
Mandatory Sparring Equipment
1. Mouthguard β
Non-negotiable. A properly fitted mouthguard protects teeth, gums, and the jaw joint from impact. Minimum: a boil-and-bite mouthguard ($15β50). Better: a custom dental guard for people who spar regularly.
If you show up to spar without a mouthguard, you should not be allowed to spar β and any gym running sparring without mandatory mouthguards has a safety problem.
2. Boxing Gloves (16oz Sparring Gloves) β
Sparring gloves are specifically designed with more padding than training or bag gloves. Standard sparring glove weight is 16oz. The extra padding protects both you and your sparring partner.
Do not use your 10oz or 12oz training gloves for sparring. Insufficient padding means your partner takes harder contact than a controlled sparring session requires.
Options: Killa Elite Sparring Gloves 16oz White/Gold or 16oz Black/Red.
3. Hand Wraps β
Worn under gloves. 4.5m cotton wraps providing wrist support and knuckle protection. Required for sparring as for all boxing training.
4. Head Guard β
For beginners, a closed guard head guard (full face protection including cheeks and chin) is recommended. Experienced sparrers may use open face. Correctly fitted head guard is critical β a guard that moves around on impact provides minimal protection.
Options: Killa Boxing Closed Guard Head Guard (recommended for beginners) or Open Face Head Guard.
Strongly Recommended
5. Groin Guard
Recommended for contact sparring. Accidental low body contact occurs in sparring even with controlled partners.
6. Body Shield or Chest Guard (Optional)
Some beginners find body/chest protectors give additional confidence during first sparring sessions. Not universally used but worth considering for beginners.
Nice-to-Have
Headband/Ear Guards
Some boxers add ear protection beneath their head guard to prevent 'cauliflower ear' β a condition from repeated impact on the ear cartilage. More relevant for people who spar frequently and hard. Not required for recreational sparring.
