What to Expect at Your First Boxing Class: The Complete Beginner Guide

First boxing class nerves are universal. Almost everyone feels anxious before their first session — wondering if they'll be the worst one in the room, whether they'll look ridiculous, or whether the gym culture will be intimidating. This guide explains exactly what to expect so you can walk in prepared.

Before You Arrive

Equipment for Your First Class

Most boxing gyms (including Killa Boxing Marrickville) provide loan gloves for beginners. For your very first session, you typically don't need to buy anything to walk in. That said, hand wraps are worth buying before you start — loan gloves aren't worn barehand, and the gym may or may not have disposable inner gloves to use underneath.

The Killa Elite Pro Hand Wraps ($29.95) are a sensible first purchase. They're reusable, washable, and you'll need them for every session once you're training regularly. Order before your first class or pick them up at the gym.

What to Wear

Basic athletic clothing works fine for your first class: fitted t-shirt or workout top, shorts or athletic pants, and training shoes with flat soles (cross-trainers or similar). You don't need boxing-specific clothing to start. Avoid very loose clothing that can catch on gloves during pad work.

What to Bring

  • Water bottle — you will need it
  • Towel
  • Hand wraps (if you've bought them)
  • An open mind and patience with yourself

What Happens in a Beginner Boxing Class

Warm-Up (10–15 min)

Most boxing classes start with a general warm-up: skipping (jump rope), dynamic stretching, light bodyweight exercises (shadow boxing, movement drills). This is also where you'll get your first feeling for the rhythm of the class. Don't worry about your skipping technique on day one — it's genuinely hard and everyone was bad at it initially.

Technical Instruction (15–25 min)

A good beginner boxing class teaches technique before drilling. You'll typically cover:

  • Stance: How to position your feet, weight distribution, and base stance
  • Guard: Where your hands go to protect yourself
  • The jab: Your most important punch — extends the lead hand, returns to guard
  • The cross: Power punch from the rear hand
  • The jab-cross combination: 1-2, the foundation of all boxing

The coach will demonstrate, then you'll drill on focus mitts with a partner or on the bag. Expect to feel uncoordinated initially — this is normal. Your nervous system is building motor patterns it doesn't have yet. They'll develop within a few weeks.

Bag/Pad Rounds (20–25 min)

You'll do timed rounds on the heavy bag or pads — typically 2–3 minutes of work, 1 minute rest. This is the cardiovascular component of the class. Most beginners find the first few rounds significantly harder than expected. This is also the component that improves most quickly with training.

Cool-Down (5–10 min)

Static stretching, cool-down exercises. Use this time to ask questions — coaches are typically more accessible and conversational in the cool-down than during the main workout.

What You Will and Won't Be Asked to Do

You won't be asked to spar. Sparring is not a first-class activity at any reputable boxing gym. It takes months of technical development before sparring is appropriate, and a good coach will not put a beginner in a sparring situation.

You won't be judged on your performance. Everyone in the room remembers being a beginner. The culture at most boxing gyms — including Killa Boxing — is supportive rather than competitive toward new starters.

You will be out of breath. This is good. It means the cardio conditioning is working. It gets easier within 2–4 weeks of consistent training.

After Your First Class

Your shoulders will be sore. This is from the combination of the unfamiliar punching motion and the isometric work of maintaining your guard. This is normal and passes within a few days. Subsequent sessions become progressively less sore as your body adapts.

If you enjoyed it, book your next class before you leave. Consistency in the first four to eight weeks is when the habits and the results form.
