What Weight Boxing Gloves Should I Buy? (Complete Size Guide for Australians)

The most common question we get from new buyers. The short answer is: 12oz for most people training with a coach, 16oz for sparring. But there's more nuance if you want to get it right, so here's the full breakdown.

The Glove Weight System Explained

Boxing glove weight refers to the weight of the glove, measured in ounces (oz). Heavier gloves = more padding. The extra padding in a 16oz glove versus a 12oz glove is in the impact zone — more foam between your knuckle and whatever you're hitting (or whoever is wearing pads).

This matters because:

  • More padding = more protection for you — your hands hit things hard in boxing. More foam absorbs more impact.
  • More padding = more protection for your training partner — in sparring, 16oz is the minimum because more foam means less force transmitted through the pad/guard.
  • More padding = more weight your arms carry — heavier gloves are harder work, which is sometimes used intentionally for conditioning.

Glove Weight Guide by Use Case

Heavy Bag Training (Solo)

Recommended: 12oz or 14oz.
For solo bag work, 12oz is the most commonly used weight. Provides good hand protection for the forces involved in bag training. Some heavier (90kg+) punchers prefer 14oz for the extra knuckle protection when hitting hard.

Pad Work with a Coach

Recommended: 12oz or 14oz.
Same as bag work. 12oz is standard; 14oz if you're a heavy puncher or want extra wrist support. This is the weight most people wear for pad rounds in class.

Sparring

Required: 16oz minimum.
16oz is the gym-standard minimum for sparring, regardless of your weight. Some gyms require 18oz. The higher weight protects your training partner. Never spar in 10oz or 12oz gloves — this is a gym rules issue everywhere, but more importantly, it risks injuring your partner.

Competition (Amateur)

Follows governing body rules.
Australian amateur boxing (Boxing Australia) specifies glove weights by weight category. Typically 10oz for heavier weight classes and 12oz for lighter weight classes at senior level. This is only relevant when you're competing under a governing body.

The Body Weight Factor

Your body weight affects how much force you generate and therefore how much padding you need for your own hand protection:

  • Under 70kg: 10oz–12oz for training, 14oz for sparring minimum
  • 70–90kg: 12oz for training, 16oz for sparring
  • Over 90kg: 14oz for training, 16oz–18oz for sparring

These are general guidelines — individual punching power also varies. If your knuckles feel sore after bag work, go up a size. If your arms fatigue very early in pad rounds, go down a size.
