Women's boxing is one of the fastest-growing participation sports in Sydney. Gyms across the city have seen a significant increase in female membership over the last few years — driven by fitness results, the appeal of learning a real skill, and an environment that's increasingly welcoming rather than exclusionary.
If you're a woman looking at boxing in Sydney — whether for fitness, self-defence, or competition — this guide covers what the experience at Killa Boxing Marrickville actually looks like, what gear you need, and what to realistically expect.
Is Boxing Good for Women?
Yes — and for reasons that are often underestimated. Boxing provides:
- Complete cardiovascular and strength training in one session. Boxing simultaneously develops aerobic fitness, muscular endurance, explosive power, and coordination. Most women who start boxing find it more effective for body composition changes than any previous training they've done.
- Genuine self-defence capability. Unlike many fitness-boxing classes that teach combinations in isolation, training at a real boxing gym teaches you how to actually throw and avoid punches. This is a meaningful skill regardless of whether you ever use it.
- Mental confidence and resilience. The process of learning to take a hit — literally and figuratively — and to push through difficult training builds a form of mental toughness that many women find transferable across their lives.
- Community. Boxing gyms, when run well, foster a tight community. At Killa Boxing Marrickville, women train alongside men at all levels, and the environment is supportive rather than competitive for beginners.
Do Women Need Different Boxing Equipment?
Gear is largely gender-neutral in boxing — technique and protection requirements are the same regardless of gender. That said, a few practical notes:
Boxing Gloves
Glove weight recommendations for women are the same as for men, with the exception that smaller or lighter women (under 60kg) may find 10oz more comfortable for training rather than 12oz — though 12oz is still the most common starting weight.
Killa Boxing training gloves are available in 12oz, 14oz, and 16oz. The 12oz is the right starting weight for most women. The gloves are not gendered — they fit the same on all hands.

Hand Wraps
Essential. Same requirement as male boxers — protect the small bones and connective tissue with proper cotton wraps before every session. 4.5m wraps fit all hand sizes.
Mouthguard
When you start sparring, you need a mouthguard. A standard chemist mouthguard is fine to start with. Custom mouthguards are available from dentists for those who spar regularly.
Sports Bra
A high-impact sports bra is more important in boxing than in most sports. The rotational movement in combination punching creates lateral movement — ensure your sports bra has strong lateral support.
Will I Have to Fight or Spar?
No — unless you want to. At Killa Boxing Marrickville, sparring is optional and not introduced until your coach believes your technique is at a level where sparring is safe and productive. Most beginners don't spar for the first 3–6 months.
Many women who train at Killa Boxing never spar — they train for fitness and skill, do bag rounds and pad work, and enjoy the gym without ever doing contact sparring. That is a completely legitimate way to train.
What Happens in a Women's Boxing Class?
Killa Boxing doesn't run exclusively female classes — women train alongside men in general classes. This is more realistic than gender-segregated sessions, and most women prefer it once they're past the first session or two.
The structure of a beginner class:
- Warm-up (10 minutes) — skipping, shadow boxing, footwork
- Technical instruction (15 minutes) — specific skill or combination breakdown
- Bag rounds (15–20 minutes) — application on the heavy bag
- Pad work or conditioning (15 minutes)
- Cool down (5 minutes)
You'll never be put in a situation you're not ready for. See our full guide to boxing classes for beginners in Sydney.
How Quickly Will I See Results?
Most women see significant fitness changes within 4–6 weeks of training 2–3 times per week. Body composition changes (fat loss, muscle tone in arms, shoulders, and core) are typically visible within 6–8 weeks. See our detailed breakdown of what 3 months of boxing training does to your body.
