When choosing boxing gloves, the weight question comes up immediately. 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz, 16oz — what does it mean and which should you buy?
14oz is one of the most important weights to understand: it's the recommended size for most adult fitness and training sessions at Australian boxing gyms, and it's the weight most coaches will recommend if you're training in the 65–85kg range and will be doing any pad work or light sparring.
Why Weight Matters in Boxing Gloves
Glove weight primarily reflects padding amount, not glove size. A 14oz glove has significantly more padding than a 10oz glove, which:
- Absorbs more impact on your hands when hitting bags and pads
- Absorbs more impact on your training partner if sparring
- Makes your forearm work harder per punch (cardio benefit)
- Slows punch speed slightly vs lighter gloves
Is 14oz Right for You?
14oz is recommended if you are:
- An adult male in the 70–85kg range doing general training
- A larger adult female (70kg+) doing training or light sparring
- A beginner who will transition to sparring — the standard sparring weight at most gyms
- Someone doing fitness boxing who wants the cardio benefit of heavier gloves
14oz may NOT be right if you are:
- Under 60kg — 12oz is more appropriate for smaller adults
- Focused purely on bag work for speed — 12oz or 10oz gives better feedback
- Over 90kg training for sparring — 16oz is typically required
What to Look For in 14oz Gloves
Padding Distribution
In a quality 14oz glove, padding should be evenly distributed across the knuckle area with additional protection at the thumb. Flex the glove — padding should be firm, not squishy, and should not compress easily with hand pressure. Gloves that compress easily bottom out on impact and provide inadequate protection.
Wrist Support
The velcro strap closure should wrap around the wrist firmly. Long-strap velcro closure (where the strap extends further around the wrist) provides more support than short-strap designs. If you have a history of wrist issues, prioritise this feature.
Material
Genuine leather 14oz gloves last significantly longer than vinyl/synthetic equivalents and feel better during training. Budget synthetic options are adequate for casual training but typically need replacing within 12–18 months of regular use.
Ventilation
Mesh palm inserts are a useful feature in the Australian climate — they significantly reduce moisture buildup inside the glove and reduce odour development.
