Boxing gloves come in sizes measured in ounces — 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz, 16oz, 18oz. New boxers often ask: which size do I need? The answer depends on three factors: your bodyweight, what you'll be using the gloves for, and your gym's requirements.
What Does "Oz" Mean in Boxing Gloves?
Ounces indicate the weight of the glove, which primarily reflects the amount of padding. A 16oz glove has significantly more foam padding than a 10oz glove. More padding means:
- Greater protection for your hands when hitting
- Greater protection for your training partner if sparring
- More forearm fatigue per session (the extra weight)
- Slightly slower punch speed due to mass
The Size Guide by Bodyweight and Use
Children and Youth (under 14 years)
- 6oz–8oz: Young children (under 12, under 35kg)
- 8oz–10oz: Youth (12–16 years, 35–55kg)
Women
- 8oz–10oz: Under 50kg, bag work and pad work only
- 10oz–12oz: 50–65kg, general training
- 12oz–14oz: 65kg+, or any weight if doing light sparring
Men
- 10oz–12oz: Under 65kg, bag work and pad work
- 12oz–14oz: 65–80kg, general training
- 14oz: The most popular all-purpose size for men in the 70–85kg range
- 16oz: Recommended for all male sparring, and for men over 90kg in general training
- 18oz: Very large men (100kg+) or heavy hitters who want maximum hand protection
What Oz Does Your Gym Require?
Most Australian boxing gyms require 16oz gloves for sparring regardless of bodyweight — this protects the person receiving the punch. Before buying sparring gloves, confirm your gym's minimum size requirement.
For bag work and pad work, most gyms are flexible — use the size appropriate for your bodyweight. Some gyms provide loaner gloves for beginners; ask your gym before purchasing if you're not sure you'll continue.
Do I Need Different Sizes for Different Training?
Many serious boxers have multiple pairs:
- 12oz or 14oz for bag work and pad work (speed training, combination practice)
- 16oz dedicated sparring gloves
For casual or fitness boxers, one pair in the right size handles all training needs. Buy the 14oz if you're unsure and in the 70–85kg male range — it's the most versatile.
What About Hand Size vs Bodyweight?
Ounces primarily reflect padding amount, not physical glove size. All major brands offer their gloves in medium, large, and extra-large physical sizes within each oz weight — a 14oz glove comes in a size that fits your hand. Gloves are sized by oz first (padding), then physical size (fit).
