How to Wrap Your Hands for Boxing: Step-by-Step Guide

Hand wrapping is the first technical skill every boxer learns — and one of the most consistently done incorrectly. A properly applied hand wrap protects the 27 bones in your hand and the connective tissue in your wrist during training. A badly applied wrap provides minimal protection and can cause the very injuries it's meant to prevent.

This guide covers the correct technique for wrapping hands with standard 4.5m cotton hand wraps.

Equipment You Need

A single pair of 4.5m cotton hand wraps. 4.5 metres is the minimum length for adult hands — shorter wraps won't give you a complete wrap across both the wrist and the knuckles. The Killa Elite Pro Hand Wraps are 4.5m, machine washable cotton — the correct spec for training.

Before You Start: The Basics

  • Always wrap both hands, even if only one needs it
  • Wraps should be firm but not tight — you should be able to make a fist comfortably
  • The wrap protects the wrist more than the knuckles — prioritise wrist coverage
  • Wash wraps after every training session

Step-by-Step Hand Wrapping Method

Step 1 — Thumb Loop

Hook the loop at the end of the wrap over your thumb. Spread your fingers wide to create tension in the hand as you wrap. The wrap travels over the back of your hand (not the palm side).

Step 2 — Wrap the Wrist (3 Passes)

Circle the wrist three times. Keep the wrap flat and smooth — overlapping folds will create uneven pressure. The three wrist passes are the most important part of the wrap: they stabilise the wrist joint and prevent hyperextension on impact.

Step 3 — Wrap the Knuckles (2–3 Passes)

From the wrist, bring the wrap up across the back of the hand to wrap across the knuckles. Circle the knuckles 2–3 times. Keep your fingers spread during this step so the wrap doesn't constrict when you close your fist.

Step 4 — Between the Fingers

From the knuckle wrap, thread the wrap between each finger for individual finger support. The sequence: between pinky and ring finger, back across the palm, across the knuckles, between ring and middle, across the palm, across the knuckles, between middle and index, across the palm, across the knuckles, between index and thumb, back to the wrist.

Threading between fingers takes significantly more wrap length — this is where the 4.5m length gets used. Shorter wraps don't allow for this step.

Step 5 — Final Wrist Passes

From the thumb, return to the wrist and circle 2–3 more times. This is where you use the remaining wrap length. Secure with the hook-and-loop closure. The finished wrap should be smooth, firm, and allow a full fist with no bunching or binding.

Test the Wrap

Make a fist. The wrap should feel firm with no slipping. Open and close your fist several times — if the wrap feels tight when your fist is closed, re-wrap with slightly less tension around the knuckles. If the wrist feels loose, unwrap and add a pass around the wrist before the knuckle section.

Wrap Maintenance

Wash hand wraps after every session. The easiest method: place wraps inside a mesh laundry bag, wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, air dry flat. The Killa Elite Pro Hand Wraps are fully machine washable and maintain their elasticity through hundreds of washes.

Own at least two pairs so you always have a clean set available. Replace wraps when they begin to lose elasticity or the velcro loses grip — typically after 6–12 months of regular use.
